Cheddar, Oregano, and Thyme Scones - for a Star Trek Murder Mystery Dinner

On Sunday, October 26th, some friends and I organized a Star Trek Next Generation Murder Mystery Dinner. I was stumped on what to cook on Sunday afternoon for the potluck, but I ended up deciding to make savoury scones in the Star Trek emblem.
Unfortunately, the butter I had wiped onto the cookie trays melted while sitting on the stove, so the scones stuck to the bottom. The test scone tasted fine, so I decided I would bring them to the potluck anyway.
The slightly burned scones
As I often do when looking for inspiration, I went to Pinterest and searched "Star Trek food." After a bit of scrolling, I came across the brilliant idea to use a star-shaped cookie cutter and slice off two of the points with a knife. I didn't want to bake something sweet with Halloween coming up, so savoury scones made sense.
Make sure you keep an eye on the butter if you make them!

Cheddar, Oregano, and Thyme Scones
Makes 2 cookie sheets (depending on size of cookie cutter)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 4 tbsps butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1/8 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450* F. Grease two cookie sheets with butter or margarine on a paper towel.
  2. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt into a large bowl.
  3. "Rub" small sections of butter into the bowl until it feels like breadcrumbs.
  4. Add sugar, cheese, oregano, thyme, and milk. Mix everything into a soft dough, use your hands to make it smooth.
  5. Flour a clean work-surface and your rolling pin. Roll out dough to 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Cut your shapes in the dough with a cookie cutter, and keep rolling it out until you have made all the scones.
  7. Place the scones on the cookie sheets, leaving lots of space between them. Brush the tops with milk to prevent burning.
  8. Bake for 7-10 minutes until golden. Let cool.
Enjoy!
